A new high-tech vent could help you save hundreds on your utilities by heating and cooling your home more efficiently — and even allow you to adjust the temperature of your home with a smartphone app.
According to Mashable, the Keen Home smart vent, which made its debut at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, boosts the efficiency of home heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems by controlling the temperature in each individual room. This means the smart vents will direct heat and cool air toward rooms that need it and away from rooms that don’t, like guest bedrooms and other low-usage areas.
Compared to traditional HVAC systems, which use a one-size-fits-all solution for regulating temperature within a home’s rooms, the smart vents allow you to only use as much heating or cooling as you need, equating to significant cost savings in the long run. Keen Home states that installing its smart vents can lead to a 10% to 20% reduction in monthly HVAC expenses — and even more savings for homes in particularly hot or cold climates.
Currently, the Keen Home smart vent is compatible with smart platforms including the Lowe’s Iris system and Samsung’s SmartThings — Keen Home developers are working on making the vent compatible with Nest, a smart thermostat. The smart vent also works with traditional thermostats.
The smart vents will be available for individual purchase, at $85 each; Keen Home recommends each home have four to six of the vents in low-use rooms. But it will still be some time before you can take advantage of this smart vent technology yourself — according to Digital Trends, the Keen Home smart vent won’t be available until June.
